    Adrien de Gerlache (), born in Belgium, was the commander of the first truly scientific Antarctic expedition.

    It was the most important expedition to the area between the late 19th century and World War I.

    Gerlache took his expedition to the Pacific Ocean side of the Antarctic Peninsula, became caught in the ice, and spent the winter of there.

    In , de Gerlache purchased the Norwegian-built whaling ship Patria, which, following an extensive refit, he renamed the Belgica.

    Together with a multinational crew which included Roald Amundsen, Frederick Cook, Antoni Boles&#;aw Dobrowolski, Henryk Arctowski and Emil Racovita, he set sail from Antwerp on 16 August
