  • Petey Bubba, on the lead in the stretch, snapped his leg and went down, starting a chain reaction that caused two other horses to come crashing down over him.

    Their riders – Cornelio Velasquez, Rene Douglas and Aaron Gryder – went flying, landing on the track like rag dolls in what seemed like a certain tragedy.

    But, miraculously, all three walked away.

    Velasquez and Douglas were back riding that day. The only serious injury of the spill was to Gryder, the leading rider at the Big A this winter, who’s been sidelined since with pulled ligaments and tendons in his left ankle.
