MINNEAPOLIS — The day Brian Cornell was named CEO of Target at the very end of July, he was at the company's headquarters here meeting with executive leadership when a coffee run to the building's main-floor cafeteria turned into a several hours-long meet-and-greet with employees.

In a large lobby Target refers to as the "great hall," filled with couches and groups of tables and chairs where employees can hold meetings, hang out, or get work done away from their desks, Cornell decided he wanted to stop and say hi.

Soon, a line of people formed waiting to shake his hand and take selfies to post to Twitter.

"I didn't come in with any answers," says the 55-year-old, who is Target's first CEO to be hired from outside the company. Cornell's predecessor, Gregg Steinhafel, stepped down in May as the company continued to suffer in the aftermath of a huge data breach that affected tens of millions of customers last holiday season.
